William Webster

William Webster
Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloys

William Webster always knew he was going to be a lawyer. But he expected to spend his career in private practice—a plan that was first upturned when he left to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War II, then by stints as a U.S. attorney and federal judge, and ultimately as director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Central Intelligence Agency. Since leaving the federal appeals bench to head the FBI in 1978, he’s been one of the government’s go-to people for cleaning up scandals and restoring public trust.
