Were law firm mergers up or down during 2009?
Depends on whom you ask.
Two reports have reached different conclusions about law firm mergers in the United States during 2009. Altman Weil's year-end MergerLine report found that there were 53 such mergers, down by 24 percent from 2008. Conversely, Hildebrandt Baker Robbins has concluded in its latest MergerWatch report that mergers were up slightly, from 55 in 2008 to 57 in 2009. The discrepancy stems partly from how the mergers are counted: when the mergers are first announced or when they're actually completed.
