Golf might be the preferred recreational activity for many lawyers, but Clifford J. Steele prefers a sport with a little more sweat and a lot more action: ice hockey.

While a hockey-playing attorney might sound out of the ordinary, Steele’s story is full of unexpected twists. At 64, he’s the third-oldest player, he believes, in the Atlanta Amateur Hockey League. He plays in three different divisions, one of which is highly competitive and draws players a third his age. And — perhaps most surprising of all — Steele took up hockey at age 34 in Buffalo, N.Y., in the hockey hotbed of the Northeast, no less.
