Upwards of 13,000 attorneys have been laid off in the past 18 months, according to some reports. And for some of those lawyers affected, starting a solo practice may be one option. The New Jersey State Bar Association is joining a growing number of associations around the country in providing help to lawyers who have found themselves in transition. On Thursday it will host "Suddenly Solo" to help attorneys regain their footing and client roster and learn how to open their own practice.

Larry Lavender has been out of work since January when he was laid off from the New Jersey office of an international law firm.
