Chief Justice Carol W. Hunstein of the Georgia Supreme Court has announced that the justices of her court would be joining court employees in taking three furlough days between now and the end of the year. The state Constitution prohibits the lowering of judges' salaries but does not forbid judges from voluntarily returning a portion of their pay, Hunstein noted. According to a court public information officer, the loss of three days' pay amounts to a cost of $1,929.36 per justice.

In July, Gov. Sonny Perdue’s budget office warned state agency heads to prepare for a 5 percent reduction in their current budgets, plus the equivalent of three furlough days for all state employees.
