At the American Bar Association's annual meeting on Friday, Sudanese lawyer Salih Mahmoud Osman spoke out against the Sudan Bar Association's denial of violence in Darfur and support of the Islamic penal code. Osman split from the Sudan Bar in 2000 to create the Darfur Bar Association, which trains lawyers to provide free legal representation to ethnic tribesman accused of crimes by the central government. This training is essentially the only legal education available to non-Arab Sudanese.
