That new associate down the hall is a glutton for punishment.
Did I learn this at the Firm reception for new hires? Please. I stopped going to optional nonbillable Firm gatherings years ago.
Humor columnist The Snark says he can tell a lot about a new associate by the way he or she decorates their office. For example, an office that gets decorated during the first week of employment screams, "I am so excited to finally be here! Of the 50 associates starting with me, I will be one of the five who makes it past the fifth year!" While associates who never bother with such frivolity are sending a clear message: "Who are we kidding? As soon as I finish my novel, I am done with this gig."
