When South Bay attorney Xia Zhao was shot to death Tuesday morning, a Santa Clara County, Calif., murder case from 2003 spun off in a tragic new direction.

Police arrested Jason Cai, 49, and booked him on a homicide charge in connection with Zhao’s death. Zhao and other attorneys had been litigating a wrongful death case against Cai in connection with the 2003 killing.
