Working conditions are looking more and more like 2001 to Bill Ward, chief public defender in Minnesota’s 10th Judicial District.
And that’s not a good thing.
Minnesota is among the states whose judicial system is feeling the impact of budget woes. Public defenders in Florida, Georgia and Kentucky have also said they may need to stop taking some cases, and courthouses around the country are struggling to keep up as the economy worsens. Minnesota State Bar Association President Mike Ford says lawyers are concerned that the cuts will have a negative impact on many specialty courts that have used innovative ways to deal with caseloads, such as drug courts.
