Attorneys from the American Civil Liberties Union and Selendy Gay filed a lawsuit last week that challenges a South Carolina’s law that blocks doctors from providing gender-affirming health care to transgender youth and adults.
Counsel for transgender South Carolinians and their families filed the suit in the U.S. District Court for South Carolina and seek a preliminary and permanent injunction on three provisions in House Bill 4624. The con tested clauses include prohibitions on medical professionals providing gender-affirming care to South Carolinians under age 18, bans on the use of public funds for gender-affirming care for residents regardless of age, and bans on gender-affirming care coverage under South Carolina’s Medicaid program.
