The Trend:

Blanket law firm attendance policies ignore the reality of practicing, particularly in Big Law, where the teams that actually work together are spread across the country (or countries) and availability is often dictated by clients.

But the emergence of concepts like "core days" or "core hours," hoteling and, yes, even attendance tracking show that there is a way forward to something resembling true flexibility. Now, if firms could just embrace this more tailored approach.

The legal industry is prone to overcorrecting when it encounters turbulence, so it's not surprising that a growing number of law firms are responding to the unexpected pandemic-era shift to fully remote work by requiring an increasing number of in-office days each week.
