A Kentucky man has filed suit in a Texas district court against Netflix, bringing claims of defamation and misappropriation of likeness after the streaming service allegedly non-consensually used an unrelated photo of him holding a hatchet in their documentary, “The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker.”

On April 10, Taylor Hazlewood filed suit in the Texas district court of Dallas County, alleging Netflix used a photo he posted on Instagram in 2019 in its 2023 documentary without his permission. He alleged the use of the photo, paired with the visuals, captions, and audio used alongside it, has tarnished his reputation and constitutes a false light invasion of privacy and is a breach of contract under Texas law.
