“We are no longer headed toward a crisis,” Grant said. “We are in the middle of one.”

Grant said that the judiciary is mindful of its role in society, one that is threatened by a shortage of judges. This time last year, Grant reported a new, historic high of 75 judicial vacancies on the bench. Today, that number stands at 58. Grant said that the courts are operating at a high vacancy rate while confronting a massive case backlog due to years of high vacancy numbers and the COVID-19 pandemic.
