Nearly 100 lawsuits alleging that social media apps such as Facebook and TikTok caused addiction and mental health problems in adolescent users will be sent to a federal judge in Oakland, California, according to an order on Thursday.

The U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation picked U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers to oversee the lawsuits, brought against Meta Platforms Inc., which operates Facebook and Instagram, as well as the companies behind Snapchat, TikTok and YouTube. Although Meta had supported coordinating all the cases, Snap Inc., TikTok Inc. and Alphabet Inc.’s Google, which owns YouTube, opposed including cases brought against them, citing differences in how each social media site operates and concerns about confidentiality.
