Welcome back to Higher Law, our weekly briefing on all things cannabis. I'm Cheryl Miller, reporting for Law.com from Sacramento. Over the next week you can curse federal tax law's treatment of cannabis on 4/15 and then celebrate marijuana on 4/20. Enjoy.

This week we're looking at:

  • A lawyer's take on New Jersey's move toward recreational marijuana.
  • Fruqan Mouzon's move to Fox Rothschild.
  • Reed Smith's work on a CannaCraft merger.
  • Two lawyers' thoughts on life as cannabis attorneys.

Thanks as always for reading. Please keep the feedback and story ideas coming. Drop me a line at [email protected]. You can call me, too, at 916.448.2935. Follow me on Twitter @capitalaccounts.

Q&A: Cole Schotz' Robert DiPisa Talks About 'a New Chapter' for New Jersey's Cannabis Industry

On Monday, New Jersey's Cannabis Regulatory Commission identified seven medical marijuana dispensaries, more formally known as alternative treatment centers, that will be able to sell recreational-use products—if they clear the remaining regulatory hurdles.

To find out what this means, I spoke with Robert DiPisa, co-chair of Cole Schotz' cannabis law group. DiPisa has been practicing in the cannabis space since 2013, when he advised a client trying to acquire an alternative treatment center, or ATC, in New Jersey. His firm's cannabis law group officially launched in 2018.
