Burford Capital saw a net loss of $56.4 million in 2021, the first down year in the litigation funding giant’s history, owing in part to a slowdown in litigation activity from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nonetheless, leadership at the publicly traded company highlighted the promise of the year, in which it committed $1.1 billion to new matters, up from $758 million in 2020.
