A California federal judge on Monday said it’s “more likely than not” that Donald Trump and his lawyer John Eastman conspired to obstruct Congress’s certification of the 2020 presidential election, calling their efforts “a coup in search of a legal theory.”

“Dr. Eastman’s views on the Electoral Count Act are not, as he argues, a “good faith interpretation” of the law; they are a partisan distortion of the democratic process,” according to the 44-page analysis from U.S. District Judge David O. Carter. “His plan was driven not by preserving the Constitution, but by winning the 2020 election.”
