Eastern Virginia Medical School was hit with a civil rights lawsuit Tuesday in Virginia Eastern District Court on behalf of Edward Si and his proposed student group, Students for a National Health Program. The lawsuit, filed by Davis Wright Tremaine and the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, challenges the school’s denial of the plaintiffs’ application for the chapter’s official recognition. The complaint contends that the school based its decision on its opposition to the group’s advocacy of a single-payer health care system. Counsel have not yet appeared for the defendant. The case is 2:21-cv-00467, Si et al v. Abuhamad et al.
