You can add New York to the list of jurisdictions that saw an improved pass rate on the February bar exam.

The overall pass rate on the attorney licensing exam—which was administered online for the second time due to the COVID-19 pandemic—was 49%. That’s up from 40% a year ago, when the exam was administered in person, and marks the highest February pass rate since 2013. The New York Board of Bar Examiners released the results Wednesday.

While many jurisdictions have yet to unveil their results, pass rates in general are trending up for the February exam. The National Conference of Bar Examiners, which designs the exam, reported that the national average score on the Multistate Bar Exam (MBE) increased 1.4 points from the previous February exam. (The MBE is the 200 multiple-choice-question portion on the test.) The first-time pass rate in Florida, which also gave an online exam, ticked up to 62% from 60%. Texas, which also gave the online bar, saw its overall pass rate improve to nearly 62%, up from 46% the previous year. Iowa’s pass rate shot up to 60% from 47% the previous year, though it gave the exam in-person in February.
