As all eyes turn to Derek Chauvin’s murder trial in the death of George Floyd, the spotlight is also on presiding Hennepin County District Judge Peter Cahill.

“When you’re in his courtroom, you know that he’s in charge,” said Cahill’s former law partner Michael Colich, of Colich & Associates in Minneapolis. “He is the person that’s going to run the courtroom. He’s going to let the attorneys do their jobs, according to the law, but he is decisive and you better know what you’re doing as an attorney when you appear before him.”
