The Shift: Want to Solidify Legal's Value to the Company? Embrace Data

The language of business is numbers. Finance, marketing, and sales leaders live in a quantitative world. Because of that, they can share metrics-driven evaluations of their performance. General counsel who want to be recognized as integral business partners also need to embrace metrics and data science to objectively measure their productivity and showcase their value to the wider organization. By leveraging existing data and deriving actionable insights from that data, GCs can better translate their value to the rest of the business. In addition, by utilizing data, they can also gain more insight into their legal spend, make more strategic decisions and better manage costs.

To not be looked at as a cost center, in-house counsel must embrace what can be quantified and create more internal value to monitor, measure, and analyze progress and results. The saying is true: "What gets measured, gets done."
