Uber’s top lawyer laid out plans for diversifying outside counsel work and how the company might react if it is forced to reclassify drivers as employees under California law, at a virtual in-house counsel event Wednesday.

Tony West, Uber’s chief legal officer and corporate secretary, said his team recently revamped a preferred counsel program that West developed while working in-house for PepsiCo. He said the program evaluates all the traditional metrics such as rates and areas of experience with how firms are diversifying their own ranks.
