John Marshall was a lion of the U.S. Supreme Court.
His tenure as chief justice stretched from 1801 to 1835, during which time he wrote many influential opinions, including Marbury v. Madison and McCulloch v. Maryland, which established judicial review and the supremacy of the federal government over states, respectively. Marshall is credited with elevating the court to a co-equal branch of government.
