The release of a memo documenting President Donald Trump’s call in late July with the president of Ukraine—“I would like you to do us a favor, though”—has consumed Washington and beyond, as U.S. House Democrats move to impeach the president and his defenders contend there’s nothing nefarious there.

The White House memo, a rough transcript of Trump’s call with Volodymyr Zelensky, showed the president pitching the assistance of U.S. Attorney General William Barr and Rudolph Giuliani, a personal lawyer for Trump, to help the Ukrainian leader investigate Joe Biden’s son.
