Remember when launching a cannabis practice seemed edgy?

Today law firms are practically lining up to announce new practice groups. The taboo of marijuana, if not entirely gone, has been overtaken by the demands of existing clients and the lure of new business opportunities.

That’s how Law.com reporter Cheryl Miller explains the recent rush of law firms entering the cannabis space—from litigation giant Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan to Birmingham, Alabama-based Bradley Arant Boult Cummings.

On this bonus episode of Legal Speak, co-host Vanessa Blum checks in with Miller to catch up on the industry trends and hot issues that are keeping cannabis lawyers busy. Miller, who’s based in Sacramento, writes Law.com’s Higher Law newsletter, a weekly update on news and developments at the intersection of cannabis and the legal industry.

She says companies in all sectors need help sorting out complicated legal issues presented by legal marijuana, and large law firms that once saw cannabis work as a fringe practice are answering the call.
