Introduction to the Improvement Process

Once a matter is over, it's tempting to move on quickly. But now is the time to capture learnings and best practices.

To the extent that I had any guiding thought when I started to explore what I’ve come to see as the components of Lean Law, it was that if I could modify myself into the most useful helper to my clients, they’d be happy, my firm would be happy and in theory, over time, I should get paid more. I’m not saying that “be the best version of yourself for your clients and your employer” is the best career advice in the world, but I’ve heard worse. Years later David Maister would write ‘The Trusted Advisor’ which says the same thing, only with data, justification and reason.

This is how the Lean Law concept started as an improvement idea for me. It’s been a great career companion. Now we reach the last of the four stages, ‘Improvement.’ More than any other, this is where you come in, if you wish. The Improvement Stage is about improving you. As I say to the long-suffering lawyers who have to work with me, welcome to the biggest room in the world, the room to improve.
