San Francisco and Santa Clara counties asked the California Supreme Court on Tuesday to block from the ballot an initiative that would allow lead paint manufacturers to circumvent a judgment that could cost them hundreds of millions of dollars.

The counties allege the initiative violates the single-subject rule, “contains false and misleading statements” and improperly amends the state’s public nuisance statute without restating what that law is, a purported violation of the so-called reenactment requirement.
