A man who suffered spinal damage in a car wreck has filed a products liability lawsuit against Kia Motors Corp. in Gwinnett County State Court alleging that a defective seat led to the injuries.

According to the complaint, Michael Insalaca was a front seat passenger in a 2013 Kia Optima driven by his father, with his mother sitting in the back seat behind him. When another driver crossed the center line and hit them head on, his mother’s knee was forced into the back of his seat. The penetration of his seat in the collision fractured his spine and some of his ribs, according to the suit, which claims that the seat should have been strong enough to withstand such an impact and prevent his injuries.
