Our country was founded on principles of freedom and justice—freedom of speech, freedom of the press and a system of justice designed to protect the innocent and punish the guilty. It has not always been perfect, but we have always been guided by the these ideals. Our cherished values and our honorable institutions are now under attack.

For months, we have listened to the president of this great nation disparage lifelong public servants whose greatest goals have been to protect and serve. We have seen FBI agents insulted and the integrity of judges and prosecutors challenged. Not because they failed to do their jobs, but because they are doing their jobs quite well. The president, fearing legal damage to himself, his family and his friends, has attacked those who have been working to protect the most fundamental institutions of our democracy.
