The explosive growth of social media applications such as Facebook, MySpace, Plaxo, Twitter and similar Web sites has been accompanied by individuals posting vast amounts of information, photographs and videos of themselves. The number of blog entries alone is mind boggling, with estimates suggesting that every day there are 1.6 million new posts.[FOOTNOTE 1]

Significantly, this data is not just being shared with friends and family. Taking advantage of the opportunity to assess potential employees beyond the prefabricated formalities of a resume and interview, a growing number of employers search the Internet for information about applicants before making hiring decisions.[FOOTNOTE 2] Many even may do so for existing employees. In fact, firings for posted content have become so common that it even has its own term, “getting dooced.”[FOOTNOTE 3]
