Payton Gendron was federally indicted on 27 counts in connection with the May 14, 2022, mass shooting at Tops supermarket in Buffalo that left 10 people dead. The case is the first in which the Justice Department is pursuing the death penalty for a defendant under U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland.

The government requested six categories of pretrial detention records held by two facilities holding Gendron. The first facility housed Gendron from May 14, 2022 until February 2023, when he was moved to the second facility.
