What were some of your most satisfying success of the past year, and why? I am always grateful for the opportunity to help our clients achieve their goals. While some of the matters I’ve worked on over the past year have received more public attention than others, every deal is important to me and my clients—and so every success is deeply satisfying for me. I am gratified by the trust our clients continue to place in me and in Simpson Thacher.

What qualities make a great dealmaker? I think there are a few key qualities essential for successful dealmakers, beyond developing the legal expertise. One is a commitment to cultivating relationships with your clients, colleagues and other advisors. Second is developing a deep understanding of your client’s business—what makes them really thrive—and their long term goals. A great dealmaker isn’t just focused on today’s transaction, they’re looking across the horizon and thinking about ways to get their clients to their next objective. Third—outstanding dealmakers are the calm in the chaos and the bridge to the solution.
