SAN FRANCISCO — Who needs a global law firm? Not Dalian Wanda Group Co. Ltd, the Chinese real estate and media conglomerate that on Tuesday agreed to buy Burbank-based movie production studio Legendary Entertainment for $3.5 billion in cash.

The company turned to a team from Irell & Manella, led by Los Angeles partner Joshua Grode, for China’s largest cross-border “cultural” acquisition ever—a category that includes purchases in television, film, newspaper and online digital media. Grode, who co-chairs the transactions practice for two-office Irell, said there is room for continued acquisitions.
