SACRAMENTO — In a bipartisan show of support that would have been unheard of in years past, the Legislature late Thursday approved a measure to allow eligible undocumented immigrants to join the State Bar.

In both legislative houses, handfuls of Republicans — traditionally opposed to extending public benefits to non-citizens — joined Democrats to easily pass Assembly Bill 1024. The legislation is a response to the case of Sergio Garcia, the Cal Northern School of Law graduate who passed the bar exam in 2009 but has been unable to obtain a law license because of his undocumented status. Garcia's case is now pending before the California Supreme Court.
