Attorney of the Year Finalists:

Michelle Henry: As Bucks County’s First Assistant District Attorney, Henry was second in command of the District Attorney’s Office and assisted Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin R. Steele in former-Attorney General Kathleen Kane’s corruption trial last year. In December, she was tapped to serve as then-incoming Attorney General Josh Shapiro’s First Deputy Attorney General, becoming the first woman to serve in that role in modern Pennsylvania history. Hayes Hunt: After years of pro bono work, Hunt successfully argued to have his client, Tyrone Jones, resentenced following the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2016 ruling in Montgomery v. Louisiana, which held that its prior ruling prohibiting states from sentencing juvenile defendants to life in prison without parole applied retroactively. After serving 43 years in prison for a gang-related killing he has maintained he did not commit, Jones became one of the first “juvenile lifers” paroled in the state and nationwide. He was released from prison Sept. 1, 2016. Read more
Deborah Spranger, the chair of Saul Ewing’s Business and Finance Department and co-chair of its life sciences practice, handled 10 mergers and acquisitions in 2016 with an aggregate transaction value of nearly $1 billion. She also spearheaded a number of firm initiatives in 2016, including the Resources, Access and Mentoring Program (RAMP), which aims to educate entrepreneurs on issues of importance to young companies through a series of roundtable programs held in the Greater Philadelphia, Baltimore and Pittsburgh communities.
