Nina Perales, a San Antonio lawyer who helped stop a Texas voter-identification law from going into effect in 2012, was in Washington, D.C. on June 25 giving a speech on pending U.S. Supreme Court opinions in civil rights cases. As Perales was speaking, the court issued an opinion in a Voting Rights Act of 1965 case.

Perales, vice president of litigation for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF), says that as she walked away from the podium after giving the keynote at the National Fair Housing Alliance conference, people who were monitoring Supreme Court blogs on their smart phones started running toward her, waving their phones.
