The gay couples who successfully challenged Utah’s ban on same-sex marriages have tapped Hogan Lovell’s Neal Katyal to make their arguments in the U.S. Supreme Court, now that the state has asked the justices to hear its appeal.

If the justices agree to take the Utah case, one of three seeking review, Katyal, a former acting solicitor general, would face another veteran high court advocate, Gene Schaerr, a former partner at Winston & Strawn and now a Utah special assistant attorney general. Schaerr left his firm to defend the marriage ban on Utah’s behalf.
