The NLJ 250: 2001 This is The National Law Journal's 24th annual survey of the nation's largest law firms. Most of the charts are self-explanatory, but here are a few things to keep in mind: We rank firms by the total number of full-time equivalent (FTE) attorneys, rather than just full-time attorneys. This allows us to create a more accurate picture of the size of a firm and does not understate the size of firms that let their lawyers make more flexible arrangements. (This calculation yielded slightly higher or lower numbers than the figures submitted by the law firms in some cases, due to rounding.) Firms were asked to provide figures as of Sept. 30, 2001. Updates were allowed for significant changes, such as the addition of offices and mergers. As in years past, in case of a tie, we rank firms by partners plus associates, excluding "other attorneys." If the tie persists, we break it based on the number of partners at each firm. In the "Law Firm" column, we list a firm's principal office, unless it has fewer than half of its lawyers in its largest office and does not wish to be identified with a single locale. A city-by-city breakdown can be found on here. A listing of "0" attorneys indicates that no full-time attorneys work in that office. "Number of Attorneys" reflects permanent, FTE attorneys. The first column in the "Partners" category is the total number of partners; nonequity partners (NE) are listed in the adjacent column. A "WND" in this column indicates that the firm would not disclose the data. We list only the total number of nonpartner, nonassociate attorneys in the "Other" category. Unless otherwise noted, "Starting Salary" lists the base salary for a first-year associate. Additional salary data are listed on here. Salaries at firms that had not yet set a salary for this year are designated "TBD" (to be determined); "WND" indicates that the firm would not disclose that information.
