Behind the Numbers

To determine what's popular in the corporate legal departments of the Fortune 500, we invited lawyers and tech experts at those companies to participate in our first-ever tech survey. Overall results for the 79 respondents are below. What's the message? Law departments have the basics, and forego the frills. Laptops are hot, with more than half of the lawyers at the companies surveyed using them instead of desktop PCs. Electronic data discovery and electronic invoicing are not -- nearly two-thirds of the legal departments polled don't use these tools. Why not? Financial constraints and communication problems with upper management are partly to blame.
