Definitions: Figures for gross revenue are rounded to the nearest $500,000. Firms that tied in the rankings are listed alphabetically. In most instances, our results are based on the accounting method used by the firm; if a firm offered us both cash- and accrual-method figures, we chose the former. Revenue figures include paralegal billings but not revenue from ancillary businesses, equity investments, or charges for disbursements. Firm size: For firms whose fiscal year ended between Sept. 1, 2002, and Feb. 28, 2003, the numbers of lawyers and partners are stated as of Aug. 31, 2002. For firms whose fiscal year ended between March 1 and Aug. 31, 2002, numbers are stated as of the end of the fiscal year. We asked for full-time equivalent lawyer numbers, which were rounded to the nearest whole number. For more complete definitions, see the Methodology.

1 Firm merged in 2002, so there are no rankings for comparison.

Correction: Due to a reporting error, we incorrectly reported Faegre & Benson's 2002 gross revenue and revenue per lawyer in our Am Law Second Hundred report [August]. The corrected figures are: 2002 gross revenue of $166 million, a 14.9 percent increase from $144.5 million in 2001, and revenue per lawyer of $390,000, a 6.8 percent increase from $365,000 in 2001.
