Legal services innovation in all its forms was celebrated at the Legal Week Innovation Awards, where a host of law firms, other service providers and suppliers were recognised for their achievements.

Among the products and initiatives showcased at the awards were Dentons’ NextLaw Labs, which invests in new technologies; a patent map devised by Taylor Wessing; and Wiggin startup Incopro, which helps identify commercial-scale counterfeiters by gathering and analysing online data.

Tiff StephensonThe sellout event took place at The Brewery in London on 27 May and was hosted by standup comedian, actor and writer Tiff Stevenson.

Also among the winners was Cooley, which shared the International Innovation Award with Dentons, and was chosen by the judges for its launch of an online resource centre for entrepreneurs in London, building on the US firm’s Silicon Valley experience.

Pinsent Masons received two awards – for diversity, and PR and communications – while RAVN Systems was recognised for its use of artificial intelligence technology to help law firms sift through large and complex amounts of document data.

The Outstanding Individual Innovator award was handed to Schillings COO and partner Christopher Mills. Legal Week editor, Georgina Stanley, praised Mills for his work reinventing the firm from a defamation boutique into a reputation defence business. “His role as a non-lawyer partner in the firm’s ABS and his achievements reflect the growing importance of non-lawyer managers inside law firms,” she added.

LWIA 2016 – audienceThe award for In-house Legal Department Innovation went to Carillion, which has created a business selling managed legal services to external clients, while flexible lawyer services LOD and Obelisk Support both received awards.
