KIRKPATRICK & LOCKHART has added Timothy McCann as a partner. McCann's practice includes corporate governance, securities law and domestic and international transactions. He received his J.D. from Indiana University School of Law in 1982.
Retired judge and JAMS arbitration expert Winslow Christian has been named president of the College of Commercial Arbitrators. Christian brings more than 10 years of major case arbitration experience to the position. He is a Stanford Law School graduate.
ORRICK, HERRINGTON & SUTCLIFFE has named Gera Vaz as the firm's human resources chief. Vaz was previously the director of West Coast operations for Clifford Chance where she was responsible for opening four new offices in California.
Angela Padilla has been honored by the Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom with its first annual Unity Award. Padilla, a litigation partner at Morrison & Foerster, was the first Latina and first LGBT partner of color at the firm. Among her pro bono efforts, she has chaired BALIF's Diversity Committee and the board of directors of the National Center for Lesbian Rights.

HOGAN & HARTSON has added Carissa Coze to its Los Angeles office as a partner practicing in the corporate group. Coze joins the firm from Thelen Reid & Priest. She received her J.D. from Boalt Hall School of Law.
Amy Borlund has joined the Los Angeles office of FRIEDEMANN O'BRIEN GOLDBERG & ZARIAN as an associate. Borlund focuses on general business litigation and commercial litigation. A 1999 graduate of UCLA School of Law, she was formerly with Yukevich & Sonnett.
Daniel Collins has rejoined MUNGER, TOLLES & OLSON after two years of service as associate deputy attorney general in the Justice Department, where he coordinated the PROTECT Act of 2003. He will resume his practice in complex civil and appellate litigation.
Stephen Biegenzahn has joined Costa Mesa-based ALBERT, WEILAND & GOLDEN as of counsel. Biegenzahn, a former Judge Advocate General, has represented debtors, creditors and others in a range of high-profile bankruptcy cases. He earned his J.D. from Stanford Law School in 1974.
Carl Kukkonen, formerly general counsel of ViaSpace Technologies in Altadena, has joined the intellectual property firm of Wuesthoff & Wuesthoff in Munich, Germany. He received his J.D. from George Washington University Law School.

Thomas Fox, a REED SMITH CROSBY HEAFEY health care specialist, is now splitting his time between his Washington, D.C., practice and the firm's S.F. office. A 30-year veteran of the firm, Fox graduated from George Washington University Law School in 1966. He joins Donald Bouey; Thomas Quinlan, who is relocating from the Oakland office; and former D.C. associate Daniel Cody in the office.
Labor and employment firm GROTTA, GLASSMAN & HOFFMAN has added David Faustman to head up its S.F. and Los Angeles offices. Over the course of a 25-year career, Faustman has been a partner at Latham & Watkins, managed his own employment law firm and served as senior vice president for labor relations and public affairs for Safeway Inc. He is a graduate of UCLA School of Law.
HOLLAND & KNIGHT has expanded its alcohol beverage practice with the addition of Manuel Espinoza, the former interim director of the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, as a consultant. The firm's alcohol beverage practice focuses on the manufacture, distribution, retail sale and consumption of licenses beverages.
The Public Interest Clearinghouse has honored Judy Garlow, Bonnie Rose Hough and Mary Viviano with "Opening Doors to Justice" awards. Garlow, the director of the Legal Services Trust Fund Program of the State Bar, has played an active role in preserving and increasing IOLTA funding and is currently developing strategies to better reach immigrant, rural and other underserved communities in the state. As supervising attorney of the Judicial Council of California, Hough has developed self-help centers and built a bilingual Web site to give more low-income Californians information about their legal rights. Viviano is the director of Legal Services Outreach at the State Bar. She helped launch the blue-ribbon state Commission on Access to Justice.
Retired Judge Daniel Weinstein, a member of JAMS, has received the 2003 Judge Learned Hand Award. The award is presented by the American Jewish Committee's Northern California chapter. Judge Weinstein founded JAMS' Class Action and Mass Tort Settlement Program. The former juvenile court judge also has extensive volunteer experience working with disadvantaged youth and is a co-founder and president of Seven Tepees Youth Program.

CARR & FERRELL of Palo Alto has added Stanley Pawlik, Eugene Kim and Jalal Sadr as associates in the firm's intellectual property practice. Robert Hayden has returned to the firm as an associate. Pawlik's practice focuses on patent prosecution and strategic patent counseling. He received his J.D. from UC-Davis' King Hall School of Law in 1999. Kim specializes in domestic and foreign patent prosecution. He graduated from the University of Colorado School of Law in 1998. Previously a software engineer, Sadr's experience includes work for computer and electronics arts companies. He received his LL.B. from University of British Columbia School of Law in 1999. Hayden previously served as counsel for a Silicon Valley-based tech company. He received his J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law in 2000.

Judge Randall Rader, of the Federal Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, has been awarded the 2003 Distinguished Service Award from the Berkeley Center for Law & Technology. Rader has served on the Federal Circuit bench since 1990, where he has authored numerous influential opinions, and is the author of "Patent Law," a widely used casebook. The award is presented annually to recognize leadership and individual achievement in advancing the field of law and technology.

Jamie Dreher, who will join the business department, emphasizes bankruptcy/business insolvency in his practice. Dreher received his J.D. from San Diego's California Western School of Law in 2000.
Michelle Stowell will become the fourth attorney in the firm's family law practice. She received her J.D. from McGeorge School of Law at the University of the Pacific in 2001.

HOLLAND & KNIGHT has added Daniel Johnson and Daniel "R.D." Sullivan as partners in its litigation practice in Los Angeles.
Johnson previously was a name partner at Sullivan, Johnson & Manfredi, representing major commercial airlines in aviation accident litigation. He earned his J.D. from McGeorge School of Law in 1987.
Sullivan also joined the firm from Sullivan, Johnson & Manfredi. He has handled numerous suits for airlines addressing alleged wrongful death, personal injury, property damage and security issues. He graduated from the University of Florida College of Law in 1986.
BULLIVANT HOUSER BAILEY has added Michael Kellar to its Irvine office as a partner. Previously a partner at McCune & Harber, Kellar has been litigating complex and general civil litigation cases in the state for more than 25 years. He graduated from UCLA School of Law in 1977.
Charles Dick Jr., managing partner of the San Diego office of Baker & McKenzie, has been chosen to receive the 2003 Daniel T. Broderick III Award. The award is presented to a San Diego attorney who "epitomizes the highest standards of civility, integrity and professionalism" in the field of trial advocacy. Specializing in securities litigation, Dick has acted as lead trial counsel in more than 20 of the largest shareholder suits filed in the country.

MORRISON & FOERSTER's Charles Moll III has assumed the leadership position of the California State Bar tax section. Currently head of the firm's property tax group, Moll practices extensively in state and local tax matters and in 2000 was counsel before the U.S. Supreme Court in Hunt-Wesson v. Franchise Tax Board. He received his J.D. from George Washington University Law School in 1979.
