Mouzon Takes Reins as Head of Garden State Bar
The Garden State Bar Association swore in Fruqan Mouzon, shown, as its president on Nov. 26 at the Law Center in New Brunswick. Mouzon is a business and commercial litigation partner at Gibbons in Newark. The other officers are president-elect Steven Hockaday, Essex-Newark Legal Services in Newark; vice president Akinyemi Akiwowo, an associate at Genova Burns Giantomasi & Webster in Newark and counsel to the Financial Industry Regulating Authority; secretary Crystal West Edwards, an associate at Schenck, Price, Smith & King in Florham Park; treasurer John Kahn, an associate with Archer & Greiner in Haddonfield; and immediate past president Lori Caughman, a Bergen County assistant deputy public defender in Hackensack.
Hispanic Bar Association Installs New Officers

Louis Acevedo, deputy public defender in charge of the Bergen County criminal trial region in Hackensack, was sworn in on Nov. 26 as president of the Hispanic Bar Association of New Jersey at Seasons in Washington Township. The other officers are president-elect Anna Maria Tejada, of counsel at Kaufman Dolowich Voluck & Gonzo in Hackensack; northern region vice president Monica E. de los Rios, counsel at JPMorgan Chase Bank in Newark; southern region vice president Carmen Garcia, associate board member of the New Jersey Parole Board in Trenton; treasurer Michael Plata, partner at Plata, Ferrer & Gutiérrez in Guttenberg; recording secretary J. Andres Mayor, senior associate at Day Pitney in Parsippany; and membership secretary Julia López, a clerk for the U.S. District Judge Esther Salas, Newark.
Latino Justice Organization Honors Duane Morris
The LatinoJustice Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund honored Duane Morris, including Newark partner Marco Gonzalez Jr. with its 2012 Pro Bono Publico Award on Oct. 25 at the Grand Hyatt in New York. Gonzalez, with Philadelphia associate Rob Palumbos, were lead appellate counsel for New Jersey’s Latin American Coalition in DelRio-Mocci v. Connolly Properties. They obtained a ruling frtom the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit that held the Immigration and Naturalization Act does not bar landlords from knowingly renting to undocumented immigrants.
Mercer Bar Foundation Donates to Legal Services

The Mercer County Bar Foundation presented two, $5,000 donations to Central Jersey Legal Services on Dec. 10 at the Mercer Bar Association’s annual holiday party at Rat’s Restaurant at the Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton. The donations were partially funded with the proceeds from the foundation’s 2011 and 2012 annual dinner dance and awards galas.
Brach, Eichler and Drinker Fundraising Honored

The Lawyers Have Heart Challenge honored Brach Eichler of Roseland and Drinker Biddle & Reath in Florham Park on Dec.14 at the Westminster Hotel in Livingston for raising the most funds for the American Heart Association. The two fundraisers were the Essex and Morris County Heart Walk and 5K Run.
Becker Meisel Hosts Toy Drive

The attorneys and staff of Becker Meisel in Livingston hosted a toy drive on Dec. 14 to benefit the United Way of Northern New Jersey, the Montclair Child Development Center Inc. and the Neighborhood Child Care Center. The drive yielded more than 50 toys and gift cards.
