Tell us about your biggest trial win from January 2016 to July 2017 and how you achieved the result for your client.

Representing Idenix Pharmaceuticals LLC (a subsidiary of Merck & Co.) in its multibillion-dollar patent-infringement case against Gilead Sciences Inc. over sofosbuvir, the active ingredient in Gilead’s blockbuster hepatitis C drugs Sovaldi and Harvoni.

The jury awarded Idenix $2.54 billion in damages — the largest patent infringement verdict in U.S. history and an important ruling in an industry where patent protection is essential to developing new medical treatments.

Serving as lead lawyer during a two-week jury trial, [I] assembled a team of the firm’s trial and intellectual property lawyers and developed the winning strategy. We convinced the jury to conclude, after less than two hours of deliberation, that Gilead’s hepatitis C drugs willfully infringe upon Idenix’s patent.

Share two trial tips that have been key to your success.

1) Whether a trial requires only a few lawyers or dozens of lawyers, no result is about one lawyer. It’s all about teamwork. The best teams become family for the trial duration.

2) Be authentic. The truth has a certain ring to it. I love trial work and I believe authenticity and enthusiasm make a difference. — Stephanie Parker
