Major technology companies and other businesses, warning of the negative business consequences of a U.S. Supreme Court ruling against a transgender boy’s sex discrimination claim, on Thursday stepped into a simmering controversy that pits them against the Trump administration.

More than 50 companies—including Apple Inc., Amazon.com Inc., Microsoft Corp., Airbnb Inc. and Twitter Inc.—are taking a stand on whether Title IX’s ban on sex discrimination includes discrimination on the basis of gender identify. The companies, including non-tech businesses such as Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance, The Gap and Williams-Sonoma, filed an amicus brief in the Supreme Court backing discrimination claims brought by a Virginia teenager.
