Akin Gump is showing the door to 65 staff members.
Firm spokeswoman Sheila Turner confirmed the layoffs Friday, and said that the firm does not have any current plans for further staff or attorney reductions.
“We wanted to get our staff-to-lawyer ratio to match up with the economy,” Turner said, noting that many other law firms have reduced staff since the economic downturn that began last fall. No attorney layoffs have been reported at Akin Gump in that time.
Turner said that the staff reductions were spread across all of the firm’s U.S. offices. Akin Gump’s domestic offices are in Austin, Texas, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Antonio, San Francisco and Washington.
Akin Gump announced a restructuring effort last summer, which prompted the departure of a significant number of partners, among them a nine-partner group that jumped to Hunton & Williams.
Turner said the staff cuts are not indicative of larger problems at the firm, which has 983 attorneys.
