It’s a he-said, she-said fight, but neither Apple Inc. nor Samsung Corp. can agree on what the contest is about. That’s how New York Times reporter Brian X. Chen characterizes the battle between the mobile smartphone makers in an April 1 article posted on the technology section of the website.

During opening statements in their patent trial in a federal courthouse in California, Chen says Apple claimed to be seeking money to stop Samsung from copying its products. But Samsung says the case is about Apple’s attempt to stifle consumer choice by hurting its main competitor in the phone business. That would be Google’s Android operating system, Chen says, which powers more than 1 billion devices worldwide, including those made by Samsung.
