iPads are becoming a regular part of the life of a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit—a fact that Fifth Circuit Clerk Lyle Cayce discussed during a seminar earlier this month sponsored by the Bar Association of the Fifth Federal Circuit. They use them on the bench, in chambers and even in foreign countries, he says. The court has proposed a rule change that will affect how the judges read lawyers’ briefs. Texas Lawyer senior reporter John Council sent Cayce a list of questions about the rule change and what it means for appellate lawyers.
