Family of woman who died in jail gets $1.9M

On Feb. 11, the family of a woman who died after suffering a seizure in the Gregg County Jail agreed to a $1.9 million settlement. Amy Lynn Cowling, 33, died after four days in custody because jail policy prevented her from taking her prescribed medication, the family claimed. Cowling took methadone for opiate addiction and alprazolam for bipolar disorder. The family claimed that jail employees failed to adequately monitor Cowling; observation logs had been falsified; and two jail employees were criminally charged for tampering with the records,
