Man carrying board across street partly to blame, jury finds

A construction worker who was carrying a board across a street when he was struck by a sport utility vehicle recovered $16,185 on Aug. 16. Luis Velez claimed neck and back injuries after he was struck by Christopher White. He also lacerated his lip, requiring stitches. Plaintiff’s counsel noted that the police report faulted White for inattentiveness. The defense argued that Velez failed to use a crosswalk. The jury found White 65 percent liable and Velez 35 percent liable, which reduced his $24,900 award.
